Le Marais and the centre
The 3rd and 4th arrondissements put Notre-Dame, the Seine and the Marais' streets within walking distance — the classic first-trip base.
Saint-Germain and the Latin Quarter
The Left Bank around Saint-Germain and the 5th arrondissement is bookish and cafe-lined, well placed for the museums and gardens of the centre.
Montmartre
The hill village of the 18th keeps its own atmosphere around Sacre-Coeur, at the price of a metro ride to most other sights.
Near the great stations

What to look for when booking in Paris
- Paris hotel rooms are famously compact, especially in converted Haussmann buildings; check the stated room size before booking.
- Not every older building has a lift, and top-floor rooms may involve stairs — worth confirming if that matters to you.
- The arrondissement tells you the neighbourhood at a glance: lower numbers are central, and the system spirals outward from the river.
- Breakfast is commonly charged separately in French hotels, so room-only rates are normal rather than a catch.
