Best time to visit Vietnam

Season patterns for Vietnam in plain terms — when the weather cooperates, when crowds and prices peak, and when to think twice.

The seasons

Vietnam through the year

✓

Peak season

Late winter into spring (roughly February to April) is the most forgiving window overall: the north is cool and drier, the centre settles after its wet season, and the south is dry and hot rather than stormy.

✓

Shoulder seasons

May to June and October to November are workable but uneven — the north and south enter their wet months at opposite ends of this stretch, so a single trip often mixes sunshine with heavy downpours.

✓

Low season

July to September is the toughest stretch for a countrywide route: monsoon rain in the south, heat and humidity in the north, and the centre's typhoon risk building towards autumn.

Festivals and dates to know

Tet, the Lunar New Year holiday (late January or February), is Vietnam's biggest celebration — and its busiest, most disruptive travel week, with packed transport and many family businesses closed.
